Not sure how many of you bothered to delve into Danzig's "middle" band between The Misfits and Danzig, but I personally love em! Just jumped back into all their albums again recently for the first time in a few years, and have been listening to them constantly for awhile. Cool thing about them is, though they started out as more of an extension of the Misfits, they evolved into a mix between that and what would end up being Danzig, and despite being the least popular of his projects (I assume due to the transition in sound) I think they produced some real quality albums during their 4 year career. Too bad ol' Rick Rubin had to mess in with it and the name of the band got changed though. Any other fans?

Rather shitty sound quality.

But the music isn't bad. I still like Danzig better.

Oh my. Me and Schmoop agreed on something. These are my exact thoughts, except I would substitute "shitty" with "poor".

Well, that was when he was still more or less recording and releaseing on his own. But, I still like it better.

I think his music had more heart in it when he was still having fun, before he became super dick.

I have Final Descent that I picked up when Tower Records was going out of business. Upgraded from cassette. It's ok, but I prefer him in Danzig the band.

Any idea what's the deal with that album? Was it an official release of new material or something the record company put together after the demise of Samhain?

Quote :
Tracks 1-5 are previously unreleased songs, at least some of which had been intended for the Samhain Grim album before it was aborted when the band changed its personnel, and finally its name, to Danzig. Tracks 6-11 had been released in 1987 on the first pressing of the Initium CD. These songs were in fact overdubbed (partially re-recorded) and remixed versions of those on the 1985 Unholy Passion E.P.

Like all of Samhain's discography, and most of Danzig's prior work with The Misfits, Final Descent was originally released on Danzig's independent record label Plan 9, distributed by Caroline Records.

That's not really their best album, I mean its good, but it's kinda mishmoshed. November Coming Fire is probably the best one to get.

Legend has it that when Glenn Danzig got signed to Def American the band was still known as Samhain. Rick Rubin convinced him to change the band name to "Danzig" and make his way as a solo artist.

Also on a Danzig note, I just got a promo copy of a Swedish band called "Devil's Whorehouse" that is very much in the Danzig/Misfits/Samhain vein. Apparently these guys were a Danzig/Misfits cover band before starting to do originals. The singer does sound quite a bit like the young and angry Glenn. Not an original sounding band in the slightest, but an interesting listen. Apparently one of the band members is an ex-member of Marduk.

I think I heard that at one time too. Also, Rick wanted him to make him more "commercially acceptable" and polish up their sound. So the logic was, "if we're changing the music, might as well change the name while were at it."

Besides, I don't think anyone could properly pronounce Samhain. Sow-ween? Sam-I-Am? Sam-Hane?

Yep, that and drop his backing band.

Randy Rose sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These guys I can dig. You can't do Danzig singing about God. It just goes against the natural course of things. Smile

You gotta admit, tho, Randy did a hell of a Glenn impression. He had Danzig's phrasing down pat. Even to the point of pronouncing the word "death" as two syllables, just like Glenn would ("DAY-eth!")
